Team Black Doubles Up Team White in 4-2 Victory

It was a hard-fought loss for Team Black against Team Red yesterday morning, by a score of 3-0, but they got back in the win column by downing Team White 4-2 in afternoon action.

Goaltender Mathis Mainville was exceptional, denying some quality Team White chances, while Team Black rode goals from Thomas Sirman, Connor MacPherson, Brady Stonehouse, and Chris Barlas to double up their opponents.

It wasn’t all bad for Team White, who saw numerous standout performances in the narrow defeat. Netminder Max Donoso was making big saves left and right, including a few on breakaways and penalty shot chances, never surrendering a goal on such an opportunity. Eric Bonsteel and Aidan Puley got their team on the board, and big, physical defenders in Matthew Mayich, and Ryland Landon made their presences known.

“I thought the first shift went well for us, but I also felt like I was gripping my stick a little too tight at the beginning of the game,” said Team White forward Ethan Quick, “But it’s going happen at the start, and we’ve just got to settle in and build for the next games.”

Team Black got on the board early, when Xavier Guillemette found Sirman on a give-and-go play, and Sirman made no mistake with a quick shot to give his team a 1-0 lead. Soon after, Stonehouse made a slick pass to MacPherson at the lip of the crease, who showed great patience and puck control to pull it to his backhand and make this a 2-0 game.

Team White got an immediate answer, though, with Bonsteel cutting the lead to one on the next play.

Not to be outdone, Stonehouse pounced on the rebound after a point shot, and slapped the puck across the line to restore his team’s two-goal lead.

After the halfway intermission, Puley made a deft little deflection to cut the Black to lead to 3-2, but later in the frame, Barlas – the 2021 first-rounder – moved into the White zone, and let go a shot that was nearly unseeable to the naked eye, and capped off this game with a 4-2 Team Black victory.

Team White will look to regroup and prepare for a tough test in Team Red, this morning at 10am EDT.

“[We’ve got to play] better defensively, help our goalie, help the defence out in our own zone, especially [me] being a winger,” added Quick, “Keep their big scorers down, they beat the team we just played, so we’ll have to bring our best game and bury our chances.”

Fellow Team White forward Cooper Foster echoed his comrade’s sentiments.

“I think we have to keep working hard,” said Foster, “A couple bounces went the other team’s way today, and I feel like if we just keep working hard, and keep going, we can take the win home.”
